With a new season underway, minor hockey is growing in Flin Flon.

“We’ve been going for a few weeks now, and the kids are enjoying it and getting ready to go for the whole season,” said Flin Flon Minor Hockey Association (FFMHA) president Scott Eastman. “We’re looking good.”

Registration numbers are going up for minor hockey in Flin Flon, especially for younger players. New teams have been added in some divisions to accommodate the added players.

“We’re up from last year,” said Eastman. “We’ve been slowly increasing every year, which is nice to see.”

All FFMHA travel teams have been filled, players have been picked and coaches have been named and trained. There were vacancies within the association earlier this year, but almost all open positions have now been filled.

“We had a little trouble at the beginning of the season. We had a few empty spots on the board, but we’ve filled those up,” Eastman said. “This is the first time we’ve had a full board in a few years now. Most of our coaches are in place and getting certified.”

FFMHA registration for this season was fully done online for the first time. Registration in previous years was either fully done in-person or only partially done online.

“It’s new to us,” said Eastman. “It’s the way everybody seems to be going these days. It was excellent. I know the people involved with that thought it worked pretty well and went pretty smooth. It definitely removed a lot of work for the volunteers.”

FFMHA has plans to hold five tournaments in Flin Flon this season. The first scheduled tournament, from Dec. 2 to 4, is the Mel Pearson Memorial Novice Tournament.

The Jason Morran Memorial Atom Tournament will take place from Jan. 6 to 8, followed by a bantam tournament from Jan. 20 to 22.

The season will conclude with a Hockey D tournament in late January and the Teagan Quinn Memorial Pee Wee Tournament from Feb. 3 to 5.
