The Manitoba Junior Hockey League did not have any current players chosen in the NHL Entry Draft over the weekend; however several that were selected got their start in the Manitoba junior ranks. First round draft choice Travis Zajac played for the St. James Canadians before heading out to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the BCHL. Zajac was picked up by the New Jersey Devils 20th overall on Saturday afternoon. The Winnipeg native scored 43 goals and 69 assists in 59 games this past season and then contributed a further 23 points in 14 playoff games. Ex-Dauphin King Mitch Carefoot went in the eighth round, 237th overall to the Atlanta Thrashers. The Dauphin product has just completed his freshman year with the Big Red and scored six goals and one assist in 31 games. And, former Neepawa Native Triston Grant was picked by the Philadelphia Flyers in the ninth round, 286th overall. Grant, now a member of the Vancouver Giants, had 10 goals and eight assists in 69 games. A more telling stat was his 267-penalty minutes.
