The Creighton Kodiaks volleyball teams enjoying mixed success this year. The senior girls have been racking up some big wins while the boys' team is having a harder time finding their game. The girls earned an early win with their home tournament at the start of the school year and have continued to thrive. They have made big leaps with wins over teams like Saskatoon and Watson. The girls recently travelled to Melfort for a tournament with the highest competition they have faced yet. 'It's a tournament where you go into it thinking if you can play the best volleyball we have played all year and not win a game, you'd still be happy,' said senior girls coach Ryan Trumbley. 'It's just that tough of competition.' The girls ended up in a 2-2 deadlock with four other teams in their pool. The Kodiaks lost in a tiebreaker and moved to the B Side. The girls defeated Melfort and then Langdon to move onto the finals against Carrot River, where they lost. After the finals Trumbley asked the girls what they thought. 'One of the best comments I've heard in a long time (was after the game),' the coach said. 'The first comment was that they felt like they had won.' Trumbley says the girls appreciated how well they played over the weekend. 'They get it,' he said, noting that the team beat Saskatoon and Warman for the first time. The girls competed in Carrot River this past weekend and will now look to Conferences this coming weekend. The Kodiaks will be paired up with Carrot River, Hudson Bay, Porcupine Planes and Naicam. After a round-robin tournament, the teams with the top two records will move on to Regionals. 'We're going to compete and see what happens,' said Trumbley. 'Carrot River (and) Naicam (are) very strong.' The Kodiaks will have to bring their A game if they want to advance from Conferences. Meanwhile, the boys are having a tough season. 'We're having a more struggling season,' said coach Ian Clark. 'We're a very young team, so we saw that coming.' The team is now having fun and Clark says that's important. The team is made up of younger players and those who are fairly new to volleyball. This past weekend, the team travelled to Humboldt for a tournament. Clark expected to see good competition on the courts. This coming weekend, the boys will travel to Regionals with hopes of moving on to Provincials. 'My expectations are always high of the boys,' Clark said. 'I told them at the beginning of the year that I wanted to reach Provincials. 'And that was one of the goals we should have as a team.' The coach says the team is skilled and has worked on a new system to put those skills to proper use. 'We're just so young and we just have a hard time finishing teams off,' Clark said. But the new system should help take care of that. 'The boys are getting there,' Clark said.
