Flin Flon Minor Hockey's season is about to kick off. The first registration was last night, with the second registration night on Monday, September 15 from 5-8 p.m. Late registration will be on September 27, from 1-4 p.m. Kids can register for hockey development as early as age four. Parents can pick up a complete equipment list at time of registration. Tryouts for the 'AA' teams will start the week of September 15 for Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget. Holly Freeborn will be coaching the Atom team, Trent Boak will be looking after the Pee Wees, Brad Snyder the Bantams and Terry Grindle will be behind the Midget bench. All tryouts are open, so all players are welcome to attend. Check the schedules at the Whitney Forum. The 'A' team program will likely run the same as last year, as developmental teams where as many kids get a chance to play throughout the year. Tryouts for the 'A' teams will be in early October. Anyone interested in coaching can pick up an application from Addie Boak by calling 687-3541. They are also looking for house league coaches, refs and timekeepers. See 'League' P.# Con't from P.# Coaching requirements will be posted at registration, as well as where and when the clinics will be held. Minor Hockey president Greg Phair said that last year saw about 275 kids registered in Flin Flon, and expects that this year should be about the same, with the number of kids available. Last year also saw the introduction of a regional Midget league. This year, the Midget league will have two separate divisions, one for 'A' teams and one for 'AA'. Phair said that this should eliminate some of the shenanigans that happened last year when games got out of hand. For Atom, Pee Wee and Bantam, Flin Flon Minor Hockey is looking to bring in teams from Pelican Narrows, The Pas and Snow Lake to play some house league games. There is also preliminary talks with Thompson and The Pas for a tri-city house league tournament for Bantam, Pee Wee and Atom. "We're hoping to get that off the ground this year," said Phair. "It gives the house league kids a chance to play as a team in a tournament." Plans are also in the works to open the house league season with three-on-three tournaments in late October.
