The Midget 'AA' Bombers attended a tournament in Portage la Prairie December 18 and 19. Game 1 Flin Flon vs. Portage - Saturday, 9 a.m. After a scoreless first period, Portage opened the scoring in the second period at 12:58 on a power play. Flin Flon tied the score at 17:43 on a goal by Chris Danis assisted by Johnny Jacobson. At 19:12 Portage got another power play goal, but a huge goal from Kiley Spiller, assisted by Travis Ford, sent both teams to the dressing rooms tied at 2 after 40 minutes. In the third period Matt Kritzer got the Bombers going on a power play at 9:17 assisted by Cody Rice. Portage tied the game at 12:30. Then with just seconds left in the game Kiley Spiller fed Walker Wintoneak a beautiful pass down the middle and with .36 seconds left Wintoneak scored short handed to give the Bombers the exciting win. Flin Flon went 1-4 on the power play with one short handed goal Portage scored two power play goals on seven chances. Shayne Pearson stopped 28 of 31 shots including a couple of huge saves late in the game when it was tied 3-3. Game star was Walker Wintoneak. Final was 4-3 Flin Flon. Game 2 Flin Flon vs. Arborg Falcons - Saturday, 12 p.m. The boys came out flying in this game after their exciting finish against Portage. Kiley Spiller got the Bombers going at 7:59 with Wintoneak getting the assist. John Jacobson made it 2-0 at 9:37, assist going to Ashton Crone. Then at 16:35 Kiley Spiller put the Bombers up 3-0 with a power play goal. In the second period Arborg got going at 7:32 to make it 3-1. Then on the power play they made it 3-2 at 13:12 with Arborg turning it up. Matt Kritzer came in all alone to put it top shelf gloveside, a beautiful goal at 13:54 to put the Bombers up 4-2 entering the third period. Cody Rice had an assist. Arborg would get a power play goal at 11:44 of the third, but excellent defensive play and a couple of huge stops from goaltender Ryan Scott preserved a 4-3 win for the Bombers. Flin Flon's power play was 1-7, while Arborg was 2-10. Ryan Scott faced 34 shorts in net and was the Game Star. Game 3 Flin Flon vs. Steinbach Millers - Sunday, 10:45 a.m. The Bombers got on the board first when Wintoneak cut around the defense and with a Miller defenseman draped on his back scored at 7:52 with Spiller getting an assist. Steinbach would tie the game at 11:13 and then take the lead on a power play at 15:28. Flin Flon would tie the score at 2 going into the second period with a goal from Travis Ford at 19:36 with the assist going to Kiley Spiller. After a hard fought second period Steinbach would get goals 22 seconds apart at 16:38 and 17:00 to take a 4-2 lead going into the third. Steinbach would get three more in the third scoring a power play goal at 7:36, a goal at 12:42 and another power play goal at 14:48 to win 7-2. In Flin Flon's defense a couple goals went in off legs during scrambles in front of the net. However, Steinbach had a very strong team going 3-9 on the power play while the Bombers went 0-4. Steinbach looks like one of the teams the Bombers will have to beat come provincial time. Ryan Scott played net facing 37 shots. Travis Ford was game star. Game 4 Flin Flon vs. River East Marauders - Sunday, 1:45 p.m. This game saw no scoring in the first period. The Bombers got going in the second period with a power play goal from Ashton Crone at 8:36. It was 1-0 Bombers after two periods. In the third period the Bombers got a power play from Travis Ford at 9:59 assisted by Matt Kritzer. Then at 10:20 Jacobson scored at 10:22, assisted by Doyle Bear. Flin Flon would win the game 3-0 to claim the silver medal. Flin Flon went 2-5 on the power play, while River East was 0-8. Shayne Pearson got the shutout stopping all 17 shots he faced including a couple of key saves when the score was 1-0. Another huge defensive game, but the Bombers were much bigger and much stronger on this day as they fired close to 50 shots on the Marauders' goalie. Game star was Greg Pruden. A very successful, confident building tournament for the team after a couple of tough tournaments in Prince Albert and North Battleford which saw them win only one game. Next tournament will see the boys go to Dauphin the January 7-9 weekend, Watson, SK January 20-22, and Brandon February 7-10. Provincials are in Swan River March 7-9.
