The Flin Flon Midget AA Bombers opened their hockey season by travelling to The Pas to play the AA Huskies on Sunday afternoon. This was the first game of the season for both clubs and the pace was tremendous from the initial face-off Kylie Spiller opened the scoring on the power play with a perfect pass from Leigh Johnston at 8:29 of the first period. The Flin Flon team managed to kill off four first period penalties thanks to the super effort of goaltender Blair Chaisson and the hard work of the penalty killers. The Huskies tied the game at the 14:13 mark of the second period and took the lead 2-1 at 11:03. The Midget Bombers ran into a little discipline problem but managed to kill off the four minor penalties they took during the last half of the second period thanks in large part to the play of goaltender Shayne Pearson. The Midget Bombers tied the game with a power play goal by Kevin Sewap at the 6:07 mark with some good work down low by Matt Kritzer who drew the assist. The Huskies once again took the lead with two minutes to go in the second due to some sloppy play in the Bomber end. Thanks to some hard forechecking early in the third period, Rudy Pegg was rewarded with a goal with the assist going to Kevin Sewap. The Pas once again took the lead with a goal less than one minute later. The Midget Bombers continued to work hard and at 7:56 of the third period Kevin Sewap scored on an unassisted effort to record his third point of the afternoon. The remainder of the game was hard fought with neither team able to break the tie. Both teams played the third period without drawing a penalty and provided the fans with an exciting period of hockey. The Midget Bombers were 2 for 6 on the powerplay while the Huskies were 0 for 8 due to some great goaltending and hard work by the penalty killers. Both the Bomber goalies turned in outstanding performances with Chaisson blocking 17 of 19 shots and Pearson turning aside 15 of the 17 shots he faced. The coaching staff were pleased with the overall performance of the team and now can focus on the areas of play that need improvement.
