It was noisy, smoky and muddy, but the crowd at the 2009 Demolition Derby wouldn't have had it any other way. Some 500 spectators packed the Pine Root Raceway Sunday for a slam-banging afternoon of metal-twisting showdowns. "As a spectator, I think it's a great thing," says co-organizer Greg McBratney. "The guys get out there and (have fun). These guys are putting in anywhere between $300 to $700 a car just to smash it up." Thirteen junkyard-bound vehicles Ð including a pair in the new four-cylinder car heat Ð were entered, each carrying a distinctive paint job. The crowd roared its approval with each massive collision as the helmeted drivers aimed to have the last car running. Bumpers dangled and hoods bent like tinfoil as the blows ensued and participants mustered every last ounce of life from their vehicles. See 'Crump...' on pg. Continued from pg. By the end of it all, there was not much else to do but tow the crumpled cars to the nearest scrap heap. The car painted up like Spider-Man, for instance, looked as though it had accidentally rear-ended the Incredible Hulk. But it was all in good sport. By all accounts the drivers had as much fun as the crowd. Even Mother Nature, who for much of the summer has held a grudge against Flin Flon, came through with a bright, sunny day.
