For the fifth year, the Shayne Pearson Memorial Bunk Hockey Tournament will take place at the Creekside Bunk. The tournament will be held December 27. Organizer Kyle McKee says so far, 13 teams have been registered Ð but there is still time to get a team entered. Last year, the tournament saw 30 teams show up, and he hopes to see a number close to that again this year. With a cover charge for the tournament, all money raised is put towards a bursary in Pearson's name at Hapnot Collegiate. McKee says the event is for everyone. "We're hoping to get a few more (out), but it really is for all ages. Lots (of people) think it's an adult tournament, but it's all ages Ð seniors, kids, anyone who wants to play," he says. Every team registered is guaranteed to play at least three games with the chance of entering the play-offs Ð which could be as many as three additional games. The deadline for registration is December 24. The event began after the unfortunate passing of Pearson, a well known hockey lover in Flin Flon. Getting together, McKee and his friends decided to put together the bunk hockey tournament in his honour. McKee says there were countless hours spent playing bunk and street hockey amongst his friends and it was decided a memorial tournament would be a good way to remember him.
