Melfort Mustangs triple up on Flin Flon Bombers

It was another missed opportunity for the Flin Flon Bombers on Tuesday night as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the league-leading Melfort Mustangs.

The Bombers failed to gain ground on the SJHL’s fourth-place team, the Notre Dame Hounds, who also lost on Tuesday. They remain three points behind the Hounds and tied for fifth with the Nipawin Hawks.

Tristan Frei, Adam Fauchoux and Andrew Durham had two goals each for the Mustangs. Brett Kitt and Chris Rauckman scored for Flin Flon.

The Bombers outshot the Mustangs 31-28 but could only beat goaltender Richard Palmer twice.

For Flin Flon, Simon Hofley made 10 saves on 14 shots, while Adam Beukeboom stopped 12 of 14 shots.

Two of Melfort’s goals came on the power play, with Flin Flon failing to score on four chances with the man advantage.

While the result was disappointing for the Bombers, it was Flin Flon’s first loss at the Whitney Forum since Dec. 9, when the Hawks squeaked out a 3-2 OT win.

With the win, Melfort now leads the Kindersley Klippers by four points for first place overall in the SJHL.

The Bombers, Hawks and Hounds all have five games remaining in the regular schedule.

Flin Flon will be on the road this weekend, playing the Millionaires in Melville tonight before moving to Yorkton to take on the Terriers tomorrow.
