Medals on line as young northern Manitoban wrestlers compete at Hapnot Collegiate

Young wrestlers from across northern Manitoba hit the mat for a zone competition in Flin Flon last weekend.

Young wrestlers from across northern Manitoba hit the mat for a zone competition in Flin Flon last weekend.

Wrestlers from Flin Flon’s École McIsaac School and Hapnot Collegiate, and Cranberry Portage’s Frontier Collegiate, took on opponents from three schools in The Pas and Otter Nelson River School in Cross Lake.

The competition, hosted at Hapnot by the Flin Flon Wrestling Club, saw Hapnot’s Christina McKay earn gold in the 70-kg high school girls’ category.

Hapnot’s Hunter Lee and Ryan Brooks both earned gold medals in the boys’ 95-kg and 89-kg categories respectively.

Darwyn Wasylciw, also from Hapnot, took bronze in the 79-kg category.

From Frontier Collegiate, Russell Halkett took gold in the 84-kg category. Silver medals went to Frontier’s Tre Jorgenson (63 kg), Jayden Moise (75 kg) and Kejan Castel (84 kg).

Medal winners from McIsaac were:

Elementary Girls: Kara Burroughs (26 kg); Angel Fajotina, Gracie Dubinak and Hanna Lytwyn (31.3 kg); Cadence McIntosh (52 kg).

Elementary Boys: Tavon Scully (33 kg); Harley Sherman (34 kg); Bryson Dumas and Levi Cooper (40 kg); Riley Burroughs and Reggie Roberts (45 kg); Maguire Lee (49 kg).

Junior High: Harrison Dumas (45 kg); Carson Lee (59 kg).
