They were knocked down to third place in the Itech Conference by the Melfort Mustangs Wednesday night, but the Bombers redeemed themselves with a win against the Humboldt Broncos Thursday night. It was anyoneÕs game as the Broncos scored first, but Flin Flon found their sticks and put three pucks in the back of HumboldtÕs net, which was good enough for a win. The Maroon and White defeated the Broncos with a score of 3-2 and moved themselves back up and tied with Melfort in second place. Trying his game out for the second night in a row, head coach and GM Mike Reagan put new Bomber goalie Matt Weninger between the pipes. And although the Broncos got past him early in the first period, he knocked away the rest of the teamÕs 11 shots in the first 20 minutes of play. In total, Weninger kept 35 of the BroncoÕs 37 shots out of the net. The first period had the home team sitting with a 1-0 lead over Flin Flon, but Michael Young, who returned with teammate Cole Wilson from playing with Team Canada West in the Jr tournament, found the back of Andrew BodnarchukÕs net, tying things up at one apiece. With help from Jean-Sebastien Bergeron and Reid McLeod, Young found the mesh on a power play nearing the four minute mark.Things were tied at 1-1, but the Bombers offered another 12 shots on net. A few penalties were handed out throughout the first two periods, giving the Bombers a few minutes behind the glass for hooking, elbowing, tripping, roughing and interference. Young lit the lantern on a power play and Tommy Castonguay was following suit as he accepted a pass from Wilson and Bergeron for the goal, making it 2-1 for Flin Flon. Shortly after, the Broncos answered back and tied things up once again. But McLeod wasnÕt going to let the team head home with a loss. It was another assist from Wilson and Bergeron as McLeod found the sweet spot and scored the last goal of the game, making it 3-2 for the Bombers. By the end of the third period, the Bombers had fired off 38 shots Ð beating the Broncos by one. It was a sweet victory for the Bombers as they were hosting the Notre Dame Hounds on Saturday in the Whitney Forum. Reagan was unavailable for comment. Please see WednesdayÕs paper for details from the Bomber and Hound game.
