The National Hockey League may be on strike, but Canadian fans still are able to get their fill of hockey for the next 13 weeks thanks to CBC's new reality series Making the Cut. This docudrama combines professional hockey with a behind-the-scenes search for Canada's best, unsigned hockey players. Dr. Saul Miller, author of "Hockey Tough," will work with contestants to help them maintain the focus and mentality needed to make the cut. Performance will be evaluated by a host of NHL scouts, coaches, and hockey professionals, including renowned coaches Scotty Bowman and Mike Keenan. Making the Cut chronicles the trials and tribulations of players as they are put through the paces of NHL caliber drills, fitness tests, and scrimmages in the ultimate quest to secure one of six invitations to a Canadian NHL team training camp. More than 4,000 players attended the initial countrywide tryout, vying for one of 68 spots at a special training camp in Vernon, British Columbia. Representing the CBC's single largest investment ever made in a television show, Making the Cut is positioned to become the standout show of the season as it fills the void left by the NHL CBA lockout. One of North America's most experienced sport psychologists, Miller draws on the psychological training and emotional management techniques that he has used to create successful hockey players and teams for more than 20 years. Excerpts from his book, "Hockey Tough," will be available through a weekly feature on the show's website, www.makingthecut.ca, where he will also answer questions regarding athletic mental performance each week. Making the Cut began its 13-week run Tuesday, September 21.
