Jonathon Naylor Editor Machinists and golfers have one thing in common: both have to be good with their hands. Earlier this month at the Phantom Lake Golf Course, people who excel in both endeavours competed in the 15th Annual Norman LeClerc Classic Golf Tournament. Walking away with the coveted trophy was the team of Kim Petalik, Ray Shirran, Neil McFarlane and Rene Beauchamp. But the Sept. 10 tournament was more about the fun than the competition, as the participants themselves would attest. Eight teams took part in the event, open to active and retired members of the International Association of Machinists Local 1848. Members of each team drove a ball from each tee box. From there, they played the ball closest to the greens or otherwise situated in the most advantageous location. The tournament is held in honour of long-time area resident Norm LeClerc, who worked as a pipefitter at HBMS from 1949 until 1993. He became a member of the machinists union in 1958. After retiring from the company, he stayed on as the union's financial secretary until 1997, the year the golf tournament began. In addition to the trophy, members of the winning team earned souvenir caps and, naturally, bragging rights... at least until next summer!
