Low interest, no sailing camp

Low registration numbers have forced the cancelation of the Mobile Sailing School.

The school was to take place July 8-11 in Denare Beach, but organizers called it off when the registration was less than half of the minimum needed.

Organizer Dave Price made the call Wednesday morning as only five students had signed up.

“With the cost of the course, we can’t cover that unless we have a good turnout,” he said.

Price had hoped to see at least 20 registered for the school.

The Mobile Sailing School started with strong numbers in the Denare Beach area in 2008.

As the years have gone by, Price says the numbers have slowly declined.

“The first four years saw between 18 and 21 students,” he said.

The school was not offered in 2012 and ran with only 10 students last year.

“I don’t know if it’s a trend or what,” Price said, wondering if the colder temperatures have played a factor in the low interest.

Price hopes for a warmer spring and summer to increase the numbers for next year.
