Athletes will soon be able to register for the MTS Manitoba Summers Games regional finals, taking place right here in Flin Flon, June 4-6. Athletes will have a chance to compete in their choice of 11 sports, and the winners will represent the region at the MTS Manitoba Summer Games in Dauphin, August 11-15. Seven event finals will played in Flin Flon, with four events being held in The Pas. Sports taking place in Flin Flon are baseball, beach volleyball, cycling, golf, softball, swimming and table tennis, while archery, athletics, soccer and triathlon will be held in The Pas. All events will take place between June 4 and 6, with the exception of athletics, which will be held at Goldie Goldstrand Pitch, May 28 and 29. Baseball, for 12 and 13 year-old male athletes will take place at Lakeside Park. Softball for female athletes under 12 years of age prior to January 1, 2004, will take place at Centoba Park. Beach volleyball will be played out on the sand at Phantom Lake for male and female athletes (two separate doubles categories) ages 17 and 18, so grab a partner. There are two age categories for male and female cycling: under 15 and under 17 (as of December 31, 2004). This event will likely take place at the Flin Flon Ski Club, with the possibility of adding a road race component. Golf will take place on the links at Phantom Lake for all ages 10 and up, right through to adult, with six different age categories. Swimming in Flin Flon will be held at the Aqua Centre, for male and female athletes born from 1990-1993. There are a total of 14 events, and swimmers can compete in up to six. Table tennis is taking off in Flin Flon, and will take place at McIsaac School for male and female athletes between the ages of 11 and 15 in two ages categories. In The Pas, archery will take place at the rodeo grounds for athletes ten and up in three age categories, including adult. Athletics in The Pas will include athletes 10-16. Soccer will be held at the SportsPlex Soccer Pitch in The Pas for Female athletes 13 and under and male athletes 14 and under. The triathlon will start at Winton Pool in the Pas. The event will take place on June 5, with four age categories accommodating athletes between the ages of 10 and 19. For more information, contact Aimee Deans at 681-7530.
