It was a huge triumph for local wrestler Delaney McIntyre. Joining the wrestling team at Hapnot Collegiate gave her the start she needed before heading to Fredericton, New Brunswick, for the recent National championships. Going down with Team Manitoba, the Grade 9 student wrestled her way to a third place finish overall. Starting out with Hapnot, the young wrester was scouted for Team Manitoba and told she had a lot of potential. As she honed her skills, she was able to bring her best effort to the table with the recent East Coast event. Taking place from April 3-5, Delaney was one of three locals who participated in the event. Joining the third-place winner were Michelle Tremblay and Brennan Quinn. Going to the East, which was also a first for Delaney, was an "experience." "I was told it would be more of an experience to go," she said. "It was a great experience." Looking at her competition, Delaney says some of the other girls had a more perfected technique and were able to take in more practice time than those from Team Manitoba. Entering her name in the 46 kg weight class, Delaney lost her first match on the Friday, but made up for it in the end with a win in the Bronze Medal match Ð against an athlete from Nova Scotia. As an honour, Delaney wrestled to qualify for Team Canada. Although she was too young, it's another experience under her belt until she can try to qualify for the team officially. Next on the docket for the local athlete is staying in shape for next season as well as preparing for soccer season. As well as soccer and wrestling, Delaney can also be found on the track team. The athlete also plans on attending a few wrestling camps to learn some more tricks of the trade as well as perfecting the knowledge she has.
