In spite of concerns earlier in the season that there might not be enough snow, and during the days leading up to the event that it might be too cold, the Saskatchewan Cross-Country Ski Championships hosted by Flin Flon Ski Club on the weekend were an outstanding success. Seventy skiers, together with team coaches and supporters, came from as far away as Regina, Saskatoon and La Ronge. The largest group of visitors came from Minahik Waskahigan High School Ð Pinehouse, and Flin Flon and Creighton were very well represented by a talented and energetic group of 15 skiers. In Saturday's classic interval-start event Logan Sapergia-Green and Bryce Bodnarus placed Second and Third in the Atom Boys 0.9 kilometre (k) event. Kendra Suss, Linnea McNichol and Austyn Davis placed First, Second and Third in the Atom Girls. Mackenzie Grove beat eight other skiers to take the Gold in the Mini-Midget Girls 2.4k. Callum Spencer took silver in the Midget Boys 5.7k, and Brett Unrau put in a heroic effort to take the bronze in the Senior Men's 14.7k. The fastest skier over the 14.7k course was Junior Man (age 19/20) Wapoose Urton of the Malemute Ski Club, with a time of 48 minutes 27 seconds. Sunday's skate-skiing event began with a spectacular mass-start on Ross Lake. Local skiers placed well again. Mackenzie Grove came Second in the Mini-Midget Girls 2.3k event and Kendra Suss took the gold in the Atom Girls 2.3k. Daryl Brown placed 2nd in the Masters Men 3&4 15.9k, and Callum Spencer took silver in the Midget Boys 6.4k. Wapoose was again the fastest skier on Sunday Ð covering the 15.9k course in 49:10 (that's 19.5kph, you local hot-shots Ð something to aim for?!) The sun was shining both days, and nothing but smiling faces all around. The visitors were full of compliments on our trails, facilities, and organization Ð and greatly enjoyed the seemingly inexhaustible supplies of moose soup, chili and wild rice and so on served by a charming group of ladies in the Chalet throughout the weekend. Congratulations to Chief of Competition Duane Davis and his large group of competent and hard working volunteers. The word is now out that Flin Flon Ski Club (after a gap of about 20 years) can still put on a major event. We'll let you know when the next one will be!
