One local Hapnot Collegiate student will be spending the summer spiking the ball in Winnipeg. Maggie Ryan, a Grade 10 student, made the final cut for the second year in a row with the 16U girls volleyball team for Manitoba. Ryan, along with roughly 100 other females from the province, tried out in both April and then last weekend. This year, there are two equally good teams representing Manitoba. Last year, the province had a team A, B and C. The girls will play and practice for the month of July with Nationals taking place at the end of the month. Both the female and the male teams will head to Calgary for their final contests. Being the only female from the North who even tried out for the team, Ryan said it was "intimidating" at first because of all the new faces. "It was hard and intimidating," she said. "I had no friends (there) and everyone else's friends were there with them." But that didn't stop the Kween from trying out, making the team, and meeting 27 new friends. Ryan started playing volleyball when she was in Grade 7 after Gord Halpin, a teacher with the Flin Flon School Division, introduced her to the sport. "I've played it ever since and just (love) it," she said. Ryan played on Team Manitoba last summer after hearing about the tryout from a teacher. Returning to the team for her second year, although it's a different format, Ryan says she's looking forward to it. "I'm excited for it," she said, even after saying that there will be two practices and a workout a day. Ryan will temporarily move to Winnipeg for the month of July and take up residency with one of the team players. Ryan plans to try out for the 2010-11 volleyball team at Hapnot Collegiate as a Grade 11.
