With a little more experience on their hands this year, five gymnasts from Flin Flon will be returning to Provincials this year in Winnipeg from April 3-5. Along with the five, five new girls will be joining the fun as they make their first appearance at the provincial event. Coach Sheena Reed, who has been with Flin Flon gymnastics for more then two decades, says she knows the girls are going to have a fun time Ð which is what the event is all about. Like any other sport in Flin Flon, the athletes are not exposed to as many events or even other gymnasts as a coach would hope for. So, for the girls, getting to go to the open competition is just a way to meet the athletes, see what they can do and have fun. And while having a good time is the main reason, the girls have put a lot of hard work into their routines. As Reed was coaching the girls on their warm-up and floor exercises, she said all those going down to Provincials will "do well." With a set routine for the beginners and intermediates, the girls work alongside each other and point out mistakes as well as offering congratulations to one another. The girls will compete for a total of two and a half hours, which includes a circuit of floor, bars, vaulting and balance beam. Along with the younger girls, Flin Flon will see an advanced and one advanced optional girl perform Ð which Reeds adds is also for fun, but notes that a lot of hard work goes into the sport.
