Around 200 children are looking for their chance into the big leagues this year as the Flin Flon/Creighton Minor Ball season gets underway. Teams got their first taste of the game this week as games started on Tuesday at Centoba Park. With registration up from last year, new president Sherry Parr-Campbell thinks itÕs going to be a good season. ÒWeÕre going to teach them team sport, fair play and the basics of the sport,Ó she says, adding Òand have fun.Ó As she climbed onto the board, she says she didnÕt really know what to do, but took what she learned from the Creighton Skating School presidency position. ÒItÕs a lot of organization,Ó she says. With 200 kids to look after, Parr-Campbell says picking teams was one of the harder tasks, but with her executive board, they managed to come up with teams in all of the leagues. And according to the president, all of the parents on the board had a child or knew a child in the leagues, which helped to make teams. This season, different from others, Parr-Campbell says the schedules are being made around soccer so players have the option to play both sports, and for parents who work late so they now can get their child to the diamond on time. As games get going and players get to know one another, she says she will be at the field for the first while as well, getting to know everyone. ÒIÕll be meeting coaches and handing out schedules and putting a face to who I am,Ó she says. Getting into another presidency position was something Parr-Campbell didnÕt really have to think about, although it wasnÕt always in her books for things to do. But she says there are a few reasons she took the position. ÒI love working with kids,Ó she says. ÒMy son is into all of these sports and I want to see them (the sports) be successful so he can continue to play.Ó Also different this season, the league has decided to let the teams pick their own names, instead of the former Team One and Team Two. ÒThe coaches and teams are picking their names this year. I thought the kids might enjoy picking a name,Ó she says. ÒAnd it gives them a bit of ownership.Ó The Centoba Park ball diamonds will be seeing teams in Blast Ball, T-Ball, 7-8, 8-9 and 10 and up playing this season.
