Hard work has paid off yet again for Flin Flon wrestler Hunter Lee.
Lee was named Canada’s male junior wrestler of the year by Wrestling Canada Lutte May 8, taking the crown over a slew of collegiate and amateur athletes nationwide.
Lee and fellow competitor Ana Godinez received men’s and women’s junior wrestler of the year honours respectively. Lee just wrapped up his junior year wrestling with the Univ. of Saskatchewan Huskies team.
Hunter’s list of accomplishments has grown longer with each passing month. Over the past year, Lee was both the CanadaWest and USports national wrestling champion in the men’s 90-kilogram class, winning his weight division along with younger brother Carson. Both were key parts in the Huskies’ best finish at nationals in 15 years. Lee earned a bronze at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Junior World Championships in the 86-kilogram class last year and won a bronze medal at both the Canada Cup tournament last summer and at national Olympic wrestling trials last December.
The national awards are usually presented after national championships - those events have been cancelled this year due to COVID-19.
