Jeanelle Leclair, Ian Clark and Jake Rogers blend in with other Hapnot Collegiate students by participating in most of the sports the school offers. What separates the three from everybody else is the Sportswoman and Men of The Year awards they received during the recent athletic banquet held June 7. "It goes beyond being a good athlete," said physical education teacher, Steve Lytwyn on how selection is made. "They set a good example for other students in how they carry themselves." That characteristic helped Jeanelle, Ian, and Jake stand out amongst their fellow students. Jeanelle was caught off guard by the recognition because her family moved to Flin Flon from Snow Lake two years ago. "I work hard all year for my sports and I guess it's just a pat on the back," said the soon-to-be grad. Track and field is her love, and she is part of the team that made Hapnot history in winning the Zones championship. For Jake, winning the Sportsman of the Year award feels good, but it carries added meaning because his mother won the Sportswoman award when she attended Hapnot and he shares the recognition with his friend, Ian. "It's probably the best way they could have done it, as we captained most teams," Jake said. Lytwyn said they have always been at the forefront. "It's maybe fitting that they share it," he said. "They're friends and it was just too close to call." "Over the years we competed to see who would be the best," Ian said. Jokingly Ian said that he competes in sports because it keeps him out of trouble. The only sports he didn't compete in were badminton and wrestling. Lytwyn said the three are "very, very worthy" of their awards. All of the school coaches are involved in selecting a recipient and they discuss and look at the athletes and their academic accomplishments and the leadership they provide. The other award winners are as follows: Major athletic winners were Andrea Stelnicki, Chadd Ticzon, Kathlyn Pawliuk, Sara Lawrence, Tyler Ricard and Larissa Row. Minor winners were Rachelle Fox, Justine Rodnisky, Chris Lussier, Kienan McIntosh, Amanda Porras, Jamie Lytwyn, Mari Pettersen, Mishai Swain, Jacquelyn Spence, Nick Hamilton, Peter Weber, Ashley Krassilowsky, Baron Charuk, Kirsten Clark, Megan Hall, Tara Abbott, Gail Neufeld, Cybil Fischer and Alex Davis.
