Flin Flon Ski Club will host the final race of the season, the Revival Loppet, on Saturday, March 13. This is a highly technical race for advanced level skiers and will be the last opportunity this season to see the Junior X/C Race Team in action. The Revival Loppet has a mass start on Ross Lake and racers choose their distance. One lap is 7.5 kilometers but racers may choose to ski one, two or three laps Ð ending at the Ski Chalet. The Junior X/C Race Team has had a very successful season, beginning with Sask Cup Race #1 in La Ronge on January 17. In the Junior Boys category, Sam Dufour-Jarvis skied a 10 kilometer race and won third place. In Juvenile Boys, an eight kilometer race saw Callum Spencer represent to a third place finish. Mackenzie Grove skied five kilometers and finished third in the Midget Girls race and Isaac Dufour-Jarvis skied five kilometers to finish seventh in a field of 14 Midget Boys. This race was a qualifying race for the Saskatchewan Winter Games and Callum Spencer skied for Team North SK in Moose Jaw, SK February 17-20. He raced to fourth place over all in Juvenile Boys sprints. This was an Olympic style race beginning with individual time trials for seeding the competitors into four-person heats then racing over a course that is just under a kilometer in length. After each heat, quarter-final and semi-final, the bottom two skiers are eliminated from the field until only the four fastest skiers are lift to compete in the final sprint. Callum finished just out of the medals. Later in January, the team participated in the Norman Winter Games in The Pas. These were the qualifying races for the Manitoba Winter Games and all four Flin Flon ski racers won Gold in their categories! Kyla Suss skied 2.5 kilometers in Mini-Midget Girls, Mackenzie Grove and Nick Martin skied five kilometers in Midget Girls and Boys respectively and Callum Spencer won in the Juvenile Boys category. The conditions were terrible for skiing with heavy snow falling and blowing throughout the race but the Flin Flon Junior X/C Race Team pushed through to come home golden. All four of these racers will attend the Manitoba Winter Games March 8 and 9, 2010, in Portage La Prairie Manitoba. On February 6, members of the Junior X/C Race Team were joined by some novice skiers from the Ecole McIsaac School Cross Country Ski Club at La Ronge SK, for the Saskatchewan Schools Championships. In that race, Sam Dufour-Jarvis again won Bronze over 10 kilometers in the Junior Boys race, Callum Spencer took Silver in Juvenile Boys five kilometers and Mackenzie Grove won Silver in the Midget Girls three kilometers race, in a field of 25 skiers. There were 28 skiers in the Midget Boys category where Isaac Dufour-Jarvis was sixth over all, Nick Martin seventh place; Jodi Tait was 15th and Nick Novosel 19th. Keiryn Black was the lone Flin Flonner in the Mini-Midget Boys and managed to place 14th in a field of 42 kids. Very good for first time racers! Sam, Isaac, Callum, Mackenzie and Nick also participated in the SK Provincial Championships in Regina, held February 27 and 28, 2010. They were great competitors in a field of high performance skiers, skiing distances from five-10 kilometers in their respective categories, using both Classic and Freestyle techniques. Sam Dufour-Jarvis won Bronze in his category in the Classic ski style race. On this occasion, the Junior X/C Race Team was joined by some Masters Men skiers. Duane Davis and Bob Jarvis both skied to Bronze medals over 15 kilometers. On Sunday March 14, 2010 the Flin Flon Ski club will present the 35th Annual Centaloppet. This is a family fun ski but the Centaloppet Cup will be presented to the winner and many other prize categories are part of the fun. The event begins with Registration of skiers at the Ross Lake Market Garden area. The race goes off in a mass start and skiers will cross the lake to enter the ski trails then ski to the finish line at the Chalet. The distance is 4.2 kilometers and the terrain is easy.
