Senior ladies now have a Hot Stove curling league of their own at Willow Park Curling Club. The league began Oct. 18 after longtime curler Gail Baker took the initiative to make it happen. "There were a few women who wanted to curl, but not serious," Baker explained. "It's just a fun way to spend an afternoon. "People thought it's a great idea and it's taken off," Baker added. "It's been fun. Everyone has cooperated. It's worked out really well. The league initially started on Wednesdays, but has been switched to Fridays starting this week. Baker believes the switch will draw added interest as more curlers are needed and the ladies wanted to play earlier. League member Terry Jaszan said she thinks it's going to be good for the ladies. "It's long overdue," Jaszan said, who has curled for 52 years. "This is such a fun league." Jaszan expressed the same problem Baker did with the need for more curlers, but said what they have now is something to build on. Sheila Sproxton, another member, also thinks the league is great. "It gives people who haven't curled for a while a chance to get back in," she explained. "For some who don't want to be competitive, it gives them the chance to curl. "It's a nice afternoon and we curl with different people," Sproxton added. She also likes that they're not always curling with the same people and feels that helps prevent it from being competitive. "Gail should be commended for organizing this," said Sproxton, who likes the exercise and enjoys the camaraderie. "She's done a lot of work." While it's just for fun, there is hardware on the line, as Andy Galamobos purchased a trophy, which will be awarded at season's end.
