Some had never skated before, let alone played hockey, but others have been playing the game all their lives.Ladies of Flin Flon and Creighton have been coming together once a week for the past two years to play hockey at the Creighton Sportex. Learning as they go, for many of them, the ladies have had a good time on the ice. Typically participating in a practice with a scrimmage to follow, the ladies of the Flin Flon and Creighton Ladies Recreational Hockey League changed things up this past weekend. Fourteen skaters and one goalie travelled to Swan River for not only the team's first tournament, but their first game as well. Dressed in their new jerseys, which were also worn for the first time, the team had a very successful weekend. League coordinator Kim Johnson says the team was looking for experience and to see how things were done Ð but coming in second place on the A-side was an added bonus. The Goal Diggers played their first game on Saturday against Preeceville and won 3-2. Later that evening, the team played against Swan River and won 4-2. Following their two games, and two wins, the Goal Diggers were set for the A-side finals Ð which was held Sunday afternoon. The Flin Flon and Creighton ladies took on Waywayseecappo in finals Ð where they lost 5-2 in the finals. The ladies earned silver in their first tournament. Johnson says for those who participated in the weekend, it was a good eye opener. The team was able to realize what needed to be worked on. The ladies will be working on passing and positioning in preparation for their home tournament to be held in January at the Creighton Sportex.
