It was another tough loss for the Bombers Saturday night as they were in Melfort for their second game of the round robin play. After a 6-0 loss from the Broncos the night before, Flin Flon was hoping to regain the high they had come into the playoffs with. But the Mustangs had another game plan as they beat up on the Bombers 4-0 for the win. Calvin Bartel started things off in net, but after three goals, Carsen Chubak tried his hand in between the pipes. The Mustangs outshot the Bombers 36-20 as well. Jason Walker of Melfort scored the first goal of the game, and the only of the period, after finding the back of the net nearly 13 minutes into the period. The Bombers found themselves in the penalty box a few times as Pierre-Luc Boucher was called on hooking, Cameron MacKinnon was given two minutes for interference as was Michael Young. Mustang Clint Olson was given two minutes for boarding, Riley Clark for holding and Kyle Fraser for interference. In the first period the Bombers were up on shots as they fired off 10 to Ilia Ejov while Bartel saw nine. But outshooting them in the first period wasnÕt enough for the Bombers as John Payne, assisted by Nick Kalnicki and Mike Kirby, scored the teamÕs second goal of the night early into the second period. And following suit was Matt Hill with the teamÕs third goal. Hill was assisted by Walker and Kalnicki for the power play goal. Penalties came pretty easy in the second period as Harley Garrioch started things off with an elbowing call. A fight broke out after only five minutes of play between Scott Day, Payne and Fraser, with the added help of Mitch Dougall. See 'Miscon...' on pg. Continued from pg. Day was given a 10 minute misconduct, five minutes for fighting and two minutes for instigating. Fraser was given a game misconduct, five minutes for fighting while Payne was also given five minutes for fighting. Dougall received five minutes in the box and a game misconduct as well. And Myles Masse was given two minutes in the box for roughing. And if it wasnÕt enough of a power play, Matt Hill was given two minutes for tripping, but the Bombers were unable to get the puck past Ejov. And the penalties didnÕt stop there as Walker was given two minutes for holding, as was Dennis Kubat a few minutes later. Masse was back in the box for slashing and Payne was in for hooking, David Dykstra for elbowing and Dustyn Clegg for kneeing, both for two minutes. Bartel saw four of the teamÕs shots before Chubak stepped in to take the eight others remaining in the period from the Mustangs. The Bombers were able to fire off seven, in hopes of a goal. The third period saw only one goal as Brady Gordon, fed by Tommy Brown and Taylor Watt, found the back of the net nearly 15 minutes in. And as the scoring was done, the penalties kept coming as Ryan Gareau was in for hooking, Day was in for slashing, Young for tripping, Matt Restoule for hooking, kubat for both fighting and roughing, Hill for roughing and fighting as well, Boucher was in for cross checking and Barrett Penner served the final penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. With a 4-0 loss, head coach and GM Mike Reagan was disappointed with the outcome, but hopes the next two home games will be better. ÒWe always play better at home,Ó he says. But for all games, Reagan says, Òthe team needs to score early to be successful,Ó adding that if the team doesnÕt score first, they donÕt usually win. ÒRight now weÕre extremely disappointed with the lack of discipline, effort and willingness to win,Ó he says. Willingness to win, for Reagan, means everything from sacrificing your body, finishing checks and taking a punch to the head. With it being the playoffs, he says the guys are feeling the pressure right now, but he hopes the next two games will be better. The round robin play is basically a way to keep the top three teams moving as the fourth and fifth place teams are battling it out for a position. In the Itech Conference itÕs Humboldt, Melfort and Flin Flon. And the Sherwood Conference as Kindersley, Melville and Weyburn at each other. Tomorrow night the Melfort Mustangs are in town as the Bombers hope to use the energy from the Whitney Forum for a win. And Monday, March 3, has the Humboldt Broncos in town.
