One of Flin Flon’s hockey traditions is back for another year.

The Shayne Pearson Memorial Boot Hockey Tournament will be held at the Creekside Park bunk on Boxing Day. It’s the 12th time the tournament will be held.

The tournament is held in memory of Pearson, a Flin Flon-born hockey player who perished in a vehicle accident in 2005.

Pearson’s friends and family started the tournament as a way to bring those who knew Pearson together and to raise money for a memorial bursary in his name.

“We decided to get the tournament back together as a way to get everybody together at Christmas time, just to have some fun,” said tournament organizer Brad Hancock. “He was our buddy. He was well known. His death was a tragic event that got us all down.”

Sixteen teams are currently signed up for the tournament, which is open to players of all ages and skill levels. Each player is eligible to play after making a $10 donation to the bursary fund.

“There’s a whole bunch of people who help put this on,” said Hancock. “We’ve been doing this for 12 years now, so everyone knows their roles.”

Several local companies have donated services to the tournament, including food and a heated tent for players and organizers.

Players can find more information at the event’s Facebook page. Full schedules will be released before the tournament.
