The Hapnot Kopper Kweens soccer team faced the Swan Valley Tigers in the semi-final of the consolation side after losing to the second ranked Altona Aces 1-0. The team competed in the Manitoba High School Sports Association rural soccer provincial championships held last weekend. Swan Valley were beaten by the Kweens earlier in the year, and were out for revenge. Kweens goal keeper Jacquelyn Spence had to withdraw from play just before the kick off with a badly infected eye, and was replaced by Chelsea Hathway. The Kweens started slowly, struggling to control the ball on a icy surface. The Tigers gained control of midfield and played high balls into the Kweens area for their forwards to chase. Inevitably the Tigers scored first from a ball played in from the left, with the ball going underneath Chelsea, who dove. In the second half the Kweens took over where they left off, and quickly equalized with a goal by Tara Abbott. With the play going end to end, both sides were trying to score the elusive winner. The Tigers broke the deadlock with seven minutes left when their center forward broke through the defence to score. The Tigers won 2-1. In a game where someone had to lose, both teams were winners in playing one of the most exciting games of the tournament. If the master of ceremonies did not know where Flin Flon was at the start of this weekend, he did now! The player of the game was Zoe Pittet, with the Kween player of the tournament being Tara Abbott. Kopper Kings The Kings lost their only two games to Altona 4-1 and Stonewall 4-4, losing in penalty kicks. Against Altona, co-coach Steve Lytwyn said the score didn't depict the game. "We had chances but didn't score," Lytwyn said. Agaisnt Stonewall, Lytwyn felt his young team was better overall. "At times I was very happy," he said. " I felt frustrated for them. They have to work to do well and we will be back."
