The Hapnot kweens won the weekend soccer tournament held this weekend at Phantom Lake soccer field. The high school tournament was played by both boys and girls teams, with the Hapnot boys picking up second place in a narrow 2-1 defeat by MBCI of the Pas. However, the girls won all their games in winning the first of what is hoped to be many trophies this season. The final game was against Joe A Ross school of OCN, who are always difficult opponents. The game started with both sides playing good soccer for a large crowd of supporters. As the first half developed, Hapnot enjoyed more of the play, bringing the ball from defence to attack in controlled passing movements. The first goal was scored by Chelsea Vietch with a low shot to the keepers left. With the score 1-0 OCN piled on the pressure but the Hapnot defence led by Kyrra Kosar and Zoe Pittet held firm. Going into the half time break with a slim lead both teams knew that the second half would be the most important 35 minutes of soccer that weekend. The Hapnot girls again came out in control, moving the ball methodically and coming close on several occasions until Kirsten Clark scored from close range. The OCN girls tried to score and only a brilliant save by net minder Jaqui Spence kept them off the score sheet with a diving save on 50 minutes. Seconds later a foul outside the penalty area saw the defensive wall of OCN beaten by a dipping shot that curled into the top left hand corner of the goal by Zoe Pittet. This had to be the goal of the weekend and would make the highlights of any soccer show. The deflated OCN team could not manage another meaningful attack and the final score of 3-0 for Hapnot capped of a weekend of undefeated soccer for the local girls. Next up for hapnot is the zone playoff in Thompson on September 21st and 22nd. With the team playing as well as they are, and with the depth of talent available they should be booking their place in the provincial finals in stonewall in October.
