The Hapnot Kweens won the consolation final at the provincial high school soccer tournament held in Stonewall this past weekend. The seventh-seeded Kweens started well with a 3-0 win over the ninth-seeded Portage Saints. The game was a good start for the Kweens in their second successive provincial finals. The second game for the Kweens was the one that they had waited for, a match-up with the second-ranked Neepawa Tigers. The game, played on a damp, wet field, was very close with the Tigers taking a 1-0 lead into half time. Two goals in six minutes by Chelsea Veitch gave the Kweens a 2-1 lead until the 60th minute when the Tigers snatched victory by tying up the game and scoring the winner with minutes left. Bitterly disappointed, the Kweens were congratulated by the Tiger coaches for the quality of the game. This dropped the Kweens to the consolation side, with a game on Saturday morning against the Birtle Falcons. The Kweens substitute goalkeeper, Chelsea Hathaway, was warming up for her first start of the weekend, when she fell badly on to her left wrist resulting in a suspected fracture. This put Jaqui Spence back in goal and she put in a great performance in a 2-1 Kweens win. The Kweens goals being scored by Nicole Pawliuk and Jessie Nygren. The final saw the Kweens up against the Portage Saints for the second time during the weekend. This proved to be a much harder game than the first time around. The Saints were difficult to break down, but relentless Kweens pressure and a goal by Pawliuk 11 minutes into the second half sealed the win. Kirsten Clark almost doubled the score but the referee called it offside. This leaves the Kweens season with 11 wins and just one loss. Starting the provincials ranked seventh, we may move up in the rankings for next season. Five players graduate this year, but with the subs and development players ready in the wings there is no doubt that the Kweens will be just as formidable next season. Jaqui Spence, Kween goalkeeper, was named the provincial MVP and all-star goalkeeper. This is a great honour for Jaqui, who works hard on her game and is a very dedicated athlete. The consolation trophy and all-star plaque will be presented in Flin Flon at a later date.
