The streak is over. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams made it to the final game at this year’s Zone 11 tournament, held in Flin Flon last weekend. However, both teams fell in their tournament finals.
For the Kweens, the final loss ended a streak of eight consecutive zone championships.
The Kweens didn’t concede a single goal through their first three games.
They began the draw with a 5-0 win over the Helen Betty Osborne Ininiw Education Resource Centre (HBOIERC) Huskies and a 3-0 victory against the Oscar Lathlin Wolverines in the round robin.
The Kweens knocked off the Frontier Mosakahiken Grizzlies 6-0 to earn a spot in the finals against Thompson’s R.D. Parker Collegiate Trojans.
In a close matchup, the Trojans came out on top, beating Hapnot 1-0.
The Hapnot Kings also went undefeated before the tournament final, beating the Frontier Raiders, HBOIERC Huskies and Otter Nelson River Nikiks in the round robin, then topping R.D. Parker 2-1 for a final berth.
Once again, things went south for Hapnot in the finals. The Kings lost 5-1 to the Oscar Lathlin Wolverines.
The Trojans girls’ team and Wolverines boys’ squad have earned spots in this year’s provincial tournament, set for Oct. 13-14 in Niverville. Hapnot may still find a berth in the tournament via a wildcard spot.
