The Hapnot Kween and Creighton Kodiak basketball squads started off 2019 right with bracket wins in the recent Kit Classic tournament in Creighton.

Both Hapnot’s senior and junior varsity teams took part, joining hosts Creighton, Hudson Bay, Norway House, Sandy Bay, LP Miller from Nipawin and The Pas’ Margaret Barbour Collegiate.

Creighton narrowly lost their first game 45-40 to Hudson Bay, sending them into the B-side bracket. The JV Kweens also dropped their first matchup, losing 39-23 to the HBOIERC Huskies from Norway House.

Meanwhile, the senior Kweens took control of their first round match with Sandy Bay, beating the T-Wolves 66-27. That set up a second-round game against LP Miller, in which the Kweens held off their opponents for a win despite a couple of late scoring runs for the Nipawin team.

On the B-side, the Kodiaks would face off against the JV Kweens in what would prove to be the only Flin Flon-Creighton rivalry game of the tournament. Creighton came out on top, earning a berth in the B-side finals against Sandy Bay. The Kodiaks won that game 60-53, earning the B-side tournament title on their home court.

In the A-side final, the senior Kweens faced the same Huskies team that knocked their junior counterparts out of the A-side bracket earlier in the weekend. Hapnot controlled the game from start to finish, earning the tournament title with a 46-20 win.
