Flin Flon Kweens 16u WomenÕs Volleyball team competed for the Tier 2 Provincial Championship this past weekend at Kildonan East Vocational Collegiate(KEVC) in Winnipeg. Fifteen teams participated, with an even mix of both rural and city teams. The Kweens went undefeated in their pool with wins against KEVC Black, Morris Mavericks, and Dakota Diggers. The playoffs started with a straight set victory over the Winnipeg Blaze. Kenora Whiskey Jacks were defeated next to advance to the semi-finals. Nivervill panthers had a strong team, the same team finished second in JV Provincials held here in Flin Flon back in November. After dropping the first set 25-21, the Kweens rallied back to force a third set and defeated the Panthers in the tie-break 16-14 and with the win advanced to the final. The Springfield Sabers ended the Kweens bid for the championship in straight sets. Although the Kweens were happy to make it to the final, there was bitter disappointment with the loss. Two players were selected to the all star team Ð congratulations to Maggie Ryan and Brandi Hanna. With a championship victory there was a real possibility Caitlyn Davidson could easily been voted tournament MVP. Flin Flon Kweens have had an outstanding season, which started in September with the JV Hapnot team. The Kweens won several tournaments and finished second in four. The team travels to Calgary this weekend to compete at the Western Nationals, where 32 teams from four provinces will battle for the tier 2 crown. The Kweens are definitely going to be contenders as Manitoba traditionally sends strong teams to these inter-provincial events. The Kweens hope to take care of some unfinished business and put an end to their second place jinx.
