It came down to the host Hapnot Collegiate Institute and Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute for the basketball showdown for boys and girls last weekend. After defeating the Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute Spartans 48-47 in their first match, the Kopper Kings won again 58-53. Coach Tony Ticzon said his team knew the final would be close. "I like the way they played and came back to win," Ticzon said. "In the last five minutes they didn't know how to finish it. This tournament helped with that." With the win, the Kopper Kings Kings finished the tournament 5-0. The Creighton Kodiaks also played, but lost the semi-final game to the Spartans 53-43. The Kodiaks finished with a record of 2-2. "Very, very impressed," said Kodiaks coach, Jodee Gray, on his teams performance. "I'm so proud of them. I really am." On the girls side, the Kopper Kweens toppled the Spartans 38-29. The Kopper Kweens finished the tournament 4-0. "They played really well," coach Karen Clark said, despite missing three players, who were for Spirit Squad. "They really worked well together and there's an opportunity when there's players away for other players to step up to the plate and they did." What impressed Clark most was the players discipline in games they won unanimously. The Kodiaks went 1-3 with their only win against Pukatawagan 45-8. Their two closest losses were by six points. Kodiaks coach Tammy Cool was unavailable for comments.
