The Creighton Kodiaks' Girls volleyball team has been getting better as the season goes on. With a 9-11 record to date, the girls have worked hard, according to coaches Jason Straile and Ryan Trumbley, to improve their games. "We're getting better every weekend," said Trumbley. The Kodiaks will be hosting a boys and girls volleyball tournament this weekend. Hapnot, Senator Miles and La Ronge will be hitting the court in Creighton on Friday and Saturday. Straile says it's nice to have a "smaller" tournament before Regionals. "It keeps us playing, but yet not having to do the travel and getting tired before regionals," he said. Trumbley added that it's nice to have a mixed tournament before Regionals as "they can cheer each other on and it gets more people in the stands." Heading into Regionals, the girls team will be likely ranked second or third Ð something both the coaches are pleased with. "We're a much younger team this year," said Trumbley. "We had a lot of growing to do. That involved early losses, but we're starting to peak now." Over the course of the season, the Kodiaks have placed third in Saskatoon, fourth in Tisdale and Carrot River and fifth in Melfort. "We've been winning more games every weekend," said Straile. With the competition getting tougher as the season goes on, both coaches agreed the Kodiaks were gaining momentum. "We've been steadily improving," said Straile. We're closing the gaps and surpassing a lot of teams now." The Kodiaks get ready to host their first home-tournament of the season this weekend. The following weekend, the team will travel to Nipawin for Regionals. "The girls have been working hard and learning more," said Straile. He says the team started out with a lot to learn and a lot to do, which comes with "growing pains."
