The Creighton Kodiaks are back on the court as volleyball season is officially underway. The Creighton Community School teams held their tryouts on the second day of school last week and are eager to get going. The Senior A Girls team will be coached by Ryan Trumbley and Viki Wallaker while the Senior Boys team will have Erik Nasselquist and Ian Clark at the helm. The teams are getting at the season early as they will host a combined tournament this weekend. In total, 13 teams will travel to Creighton for the first volleyball tournament of the season. The girls will see five teams, plus the Kodiaks, while the boys will see nine teams including the Kodiaks. On the girls' squad, only four players will return from last year. The team graduated six players with one player moving. 'So there's lots of change,' said Trumbley. Trumbley had taken a few seasons off from the higher level teams but finds himself coaching at the senior level again. 'It will take a little while to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of the team, but it's a long season and there is a long time to do it in,' said the coach. With six rookies on the team this year Trumbley says, like always, that he wants to see 'good, strong competition this year.' Trumbley sees plenty of potential on the court this year and thinks his team will find success. 'They are all great kids, they work hard, and are committed,' said Trumbley, noting that this year's team will be 'fun to coach.' The boys' squad is looking similar to last year as they only graduated four players and have nine returnees. Clark says that when it comes to coaching, his expectations are 'always pretty high.' 'I want to win conference and move on to provincials and do well there,' he said. Clark's team is fairly young this year, but the coach hopes to focus on things like wins and losses and more statistics. 'The youth of the program is exciting,' he said. 'I have a good group of nine from last year and then the Grade 8s,' said the returning coach. Clark will encourage his returning players to become role models and take leadership roles for the younger athletes. 'I think they will do quite well,' he said. The Kodiaks will host this weekend with games set on Friday and Saturday at the school's gymnasium.
