It was one of the bigger volleyball tournaments in Saskatchewan that the Kodiaks had the chance to participate in. The athletes from Creighton Community School travelled to Melfort last weekend to compete in another event. For the girls, they took first place over Porcupine Plane. "It was good," said coach Ryan Trumbley. "It was a big accomplishment for the team," he said, noting that how big the tournament was. The girls were at a bit of a disadvantage Friday when they started their games as many of the players had been out sick for previous practices. Starting off a a little sluggish, the girls were able to find their groove on Saturday. "We came out and played very very well," he said. The team really pulled together, according to Trumbley, as they were able to fight back when it counted. In the first set of the semi finals, the Kodiaks were down 14-4 and were able to fight to come back and win it 25-23. Hearing comments from other coaches, Trumbley says they were told they "overwhelmed" other teams with their offense. Next up for the girls are the conferences Ð which the Kodiaks will be hosting on November 6 and 7. The top two teams from there move on to Regionals with the top two teams from there moving onto Provincials. The Kodiaks have beat each team that will be at the Conferences, so Trumbley suspects they will do well. "But we don't want to take anything for granted." For the boys, they attended Melfort's tournament and placed second on the B-side. With 10 players on the road for their fourth tournament of the season, it was a big event for the Kodiaks. "This was the largest tournament we have been to so far and it was the first time we have faced any of the other nine teams," said coach Janel Pearson. After taking part in Flin Flon's tournament the previous weekend, the Kodiaks were putting them emphasis on round robin play Ð which left them with a 2-2 record. Following the semi finals against Gronlid, the Kodiaks faced Melfort in the finals Ð both sets went to the host team. The team has been working together to fight as a unit. "Now that the skills and our system is in place, it's important for the team to play together," she says. "Chemistry has a lot to do with the building a successful team and the more games we plat, the more our game will come together." Alongside Pearson, coach Erik Nasselquist said he was happy with the teams performance. As well, he says, the boys have gained confidence and were able to finish their games and earn their points. Next up for the boys is a tournament in Kinistino on November 6 and 7. "We are expecting the....tournament to be tough and are looking forward to the challenge," says Pearson.
