Sending roughly 40 athletes to the NEESAC's for two days of competition resulted in 12 athletes qualifying for provincials in 25 events. The Creighton Community School's Track and Field team surpassed their coaches' expectations when 12 athletes qualified for the next step Ð which is four more than last year. "We're elated," says running coach Ryan Trumbley. "It's better than we expected. "We were a little concerned because we didn't have the practice time because of the weather, but the athletes really stepped up." And they stepped up in a big way as the athletes brought home top honours and showed real character. The Kodiaks competed against 17 other schools in the two-day competition, which was spread out over the course of two weeks in Melfort. According to Trumbley, the athletes did well in all events, but the runners did really well Ð with the boys winning first place in the 4x100 metre relay and the senior girls placing third. As for the athletes in all, Trumbley says there were a few surprises Ð in a good way Ð as to who qualified. "We had some people qualify, new people, that didn't qualify last year," says the coach. "We're really happy with it." Out of the 17 schools competing, Creighton Community School placed fourth overall for points and second for the most athletes attending. From here, the athletes prepare for Provincials, which take place next weekend in Prince Albert. "We are very very impressed," says Trumbley, on behalf of all the coaches. But it wasn't just the coaches who were impressed. "The athletes had a lot of fun," he says. "They were impressed with the amount of competition and happy with the way they competed and stacked up against everyone else." Going into Provincials, the athletes know it is going to be harder, but Trumbley says they are ready for it. With 12 athletes and 25 events, there won't be nearly as much down time as last season Ð which had athletes waiting for hours before an event. "The competition goes up now and we're hoping we will improve on what we did last year in Provincials," he says. "We hope for more top eight's and come away with another medal."
