Not only was it their first home tournament of the season, but the senior girls' basketball team at Creighton Community School hosted their first tournament ever this past weekend. Teams came in from Sandy Bay, Hudson Bay and La Ronge, joining the Hapnot Kweens in stopping in to play in the Kit Klassic Kodiak Invitational Tournament. The Kodiaks went 4-0 in the round-robin play tournament to seal first place while the Hapnot Kweens placed second with a 3-1 record. Kodiaks coach Ryan Trumbley says the girls really learned from the weekend. "They came out a little nervous against Hapnot on Friday, but the things we were working on in practice, they were really trying to do in the game," says Trumbley. As the 12-player team was formed just before the Christmas break, the girls were able to experience a road tournament before taking time off for the holidays. The Kodiaks travelled to Birch Hills to compete against a few other schools. But nothing compares to a home tournament. "It was our first ever girls' basketball tournament and it was really great that we were able to win it," says Trumbley. As for the team itself, the coach says he is "very happy" with the way things are going. "They are all working very hard," he adds. As a returning coach, Trumbley says they have changed their strategy for this season from last. "We are trying to work the ball into the posts a little more and press a lot more than we did last year," he says. Looking at the team from the coach's eyes, he says the team is "a little more experienced, a lot more actually, and they have a lot of confidence in themselves and their teammates." Watching the players, Trumbley says, was exciting. "All the rookies played well," he says, noting he was pleasantly surprised. "And really happy with the way the (returning players) played."
