Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Having 16 athletes compete against 17 other schools didn't stop the Creighton Community School Kodiaks from bringing home 18 medals from the NESSAC events this past weekend. Along with nearly 20 medals, many of the athletes earned personal bests, said running coach Ryan Trumbley, in an e-mail. "The athletes were excepted to do so well [and they] did not disappoint," said Trumbley. "...they had great success and there were also a few surprises, which was nice to see." Grade 9 Kodiak Mason Antoniak had a great day as the Midget athlete earned a Gold medal in Javelin, with a "huge throw of 43 meters." As well, Antoniak earned a Silver medal in the 200 meter and a Bronze in the 100 meter. "He has great overall talent and (we) look forward to big things from in the future," said Trumbley. Returning athlete Krystal Kawa had a successful day as she took Bronze in Long Jump and fourth in the 100 meter dash. Kawa ran a perfect race to win the Gold in the 80 meter hurdles. 'Impressive feat' "This is an impressive feat, as Krystal in in the Senior Girls category and was up against the top athletes," said Trumbley. As a Grade 11 student, Kawa has one year left to compete in the Sask-atchewan High School Athletes Association's Track and Field events. Another successful story came to the Kodiaks with Mark Linnick, who won the Gold medal in Junior Boys Hurdles. Lia Nasselquist earned a Silver medal in Junior Girls High Jump Ð earning a personal best of 1.40. Hitting the running track, Trumbley says the long distance athletes performed "really well with many medals to show for it." "I think having the running track (at home) really helped in their training and we saw the results on competition day." The coach says it was great to see the success of the Hurdle athletes. "...as that was something we identified we would like to focus on, a few years ago," said Trumbley. One-two finish The Kodiaks even posted a one-two finish in Senior Girls Hurdles as Kawa placed first and Jessie Manns took second. For Hurdles, the Kodiaks earned two Gold medals, a Silver and a Bronze. "Overall, it was a great competition," said Trumbley, "and our athletes represented our school well. "...our coaches were impressed with the individual and team success of the day. It is nice to see the athletes rewarded for all of the hard work they put into the season with the success at the end of the meet." The Creighton Kodiaks will continue to train as they look to the provincial meet later this month.1/6/11
