Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Creighton Kodiaks senior girls basketball team has been selected and they are preparing for their first tournament of the year, this weekend. Made of up 12 players, the senior A team will head to Foam Lake for a challenging weekend of basketball. With 21 athletes trying out, the team was selected last week. As of earlier last week, the team had had five practices together. Last year's basketball team only lost two players. With 10 players still on the roster, coaches Ryan Trumbley, Jason Straile, Trina Senyk and Faryn Johnsgaard selected roughly the same team as last year. In doing so, Trumbley says the team "is a lot more experienced than we were this time last year." The team heads to Foam Lake, near Melfort, today for what could be one of the more difficult tournaments of the season. The Kodiaks will be facing three of last year's teams who made it to provincials. Competing Competing against Foam Lake, Southey and Esterhazy, Trumbley says he knows it's going to be a challenging weekend. "We wanted to start off with a hard tournament to see where everyone was on," he said. The Kodiaks will also get their chance at hosting this year as they have claimed the first weekend in January as their own. Provincials this year will happen towards the end of March. With the team selected for roughly two weeks now, Trumbley says there are some qualities already standing out. "We work really hard, we're a happy team and we work well together," he said. With the majority of the players the same as last year, Trumbley says right now the team is working on review. But, he says, he can already see a strong sense of leadership in a number of the girls. Of the 21 girls who tried out for the Senior A, those who weren't selected make up the Senior B team.
