The Senior Boys Volleyball team from Creighton Community School travelled to Rosthern the weekend of October 3 and 4 for their second tournament of the season. Against the six teams, the Kodiaks placed fourth. Coach Janel Pearson says the team was their best when they were able to focus on their game. The tournament got underway Friday with a game against La Ronge Ð where the teams played the previous weekend in their first tournament. On Saturday, the Kodiaks were up against Stanley Mission, Rosthern Junior College and Cudworth. "The games against Cudworth were definitely our most exciting games," said Pearson. "It was a great game for three former students who travelled up from Saskatoon to cheer on the senior boys during the semifinal game." Both Pearson and coach Eric Nasselquist were happy with the team's performance and the experience the team gained. "They are getting farther in tournaments this year and the boys are playing their best ball once they've gotten into semifinals position, but we would like to see them with the same level of confidence and energy throughout the round robin," she says. Through the games themselves, Pearson says the boys played their best when their setter was in position Ð from there, things fell into place. "We are going to keep working on developing our middles this week," said Pearson as the team was preparing for Flin Flon's pre-zones tournament this past weekend. "Defensively we saw the improvements that we were looking for, but we would still like to see more offensive responsibility placed on them once we are ready." Pearson says the team made some vast improvements from the La Ronge tournament the previous weekend. "Our starting middles, Scott Klemmer and Carson McKonka, both recorded blocks that were not returned into the double digits over the course of the weekend," she said. "Even our rookie middle made his court time count getting his hands in front of a power hit to score a point with a block." Aside from blocking, Pearson says the team's passing was good. "Tory Nasselquist was great on the attack defence in the back row and I wouldn't hesitate to say that Lloyd Kawa was the strongest and most consistent hitter of the tournament. "Other teams were very aware of him right from the get go and he logged the most kills for our team over the course of the tournament." The Flin Flon tournament was next for the Kodiaks Ð where the team would continue to work on their game. "Along with the...development of our middles, we will also be working on our defensive coverage...to prepare for the tournament," said Pearson. Although the team took a loss in the semifinals, Pearson says she hopes the team recognizes how well they played Ð and that it would carry over to this past weekend.
