The Hapnot Kings soccer team began its journey to be crowned zone champions on Friday, September 26 in The Pas. The tournament consisted of nine teams, with five schools in HapnotÕs pool and four in the other. After the round robin, the two first-placed teams would battle it our for Zone 11 supremacy. HapnotÕs opening game was against Pelican Rapids. The flow of the game was dictated by the Kings, who attacked from both flanks and through the middle to win the match 11 Ð 0. Goals for the Kings were scored by Brennon Madland, who scored five times, Dan Chrupalo who had a hat trick, Rylan Veitch who had two, and Ben Leclerc who had one goal. The next game was a forfeit victory for the Kings as Saskastew School failed to show up for the second round robin match. On Saturday morning, the Kings continued their quest for top team in the north with a game against The PasÕ MBCI. Despite dominating the game, the Kings failed to take their chances and came away with a hard fought 3 Ð 1 victory. Goals for the Kings were scored by Madland, who picked up a brace, and Brett Belfry who had one. The KingsÕ final game of the round robin was against Frontier Collegiate, which saw the two undefeated teams in the pool battle it out for a spot in the final. In a physical encounter, the Kings kept their composure and attacked throughout the entire game coming away with a 6 Ð 2 victory to book their spot in the final. Goal scorers for the Kings were Kevin Spence and Chrupalo who each netted twice, and Austin Whitford and Cole Grove who picked up one goal a piece. This set up an exciting final between the hosts Joe A. Ross School of The Pas and last seasonÕs defending champions Ð the Hapnot Kings. The Kings came out a little slower than their counterparts, but managed to get in front with a Spence goal giving them a 1 Ð 0 score line. Shortly thereafter the Joe A. Ross Flyers began to pile on the pressure and were awarded a penalty. The Kings keeper Chris Renard looked confident in net on the penalty kick, which the Joe A. Ross player kicked wide of the post. However the referee was not happy with the position of the ball and ordered another kick. Renard read the shooter and managed to turn the ball behind for a corner. Although the Hapnot players were relieved, they were not entirely into the game. Joe A. Ross continued to pressure the KingsÕ net and their hard work paid off with a well worked goal. The Flyers were not done and their quality of possession and play saw them enter the halftime break leading 2 Ð 1 over the Kings. The Kings made one small adjustment to their game for the start of the second half and came out like an entirely different team, playing the ball into space and creating chance after chance. Within five minutes the Kings were awarded a penalty kick, which team captain Spence confidently buried into the back of the net, breathing new life into the Kings. The score, now tied at 2 Ð 2, saw the Kings continue to press forward and a well crafted one two between Spence and Madland saw Madland slot the ball past the keeper giving the Kings their first lead since the early stage of the first half. From there, the Flyers managed a few quality attacks, but the KingsÕ defence and keeper were up to the task at hand. On a counter attack Madland scored his second of the game and sealed the victory for the Kings as they ran out 4 Ð 2 victors over the Flyers. The Kings now have a few weekends off before they head to provincials as one of the favorites with a perfect season record of 12 wins, 0 draws, and 0 loses.
