The Hapnot Kings and Kweens both went undefeated in their respective soccer tournaments to bring home the first banners of the season.
Both the Kings and Kweens travelled to Neepawa for a Sept. 12 tournament where they earned first place.
The Kings took Altona into overtime and earned a 2-1 win before defeating Neepawa 2-0. The Kings’ final game was against Swan River and they took a commanding 5-0 victory before heading back to Flin Flon.
Picking up markers for the Kings over the weekend were Tayler Kittle with two, Brandon Powell with three, Nathan Whitbread with two, and Nic Novosel and Cole Rierson, each with one.
Similar story
The Kweens had a similar story, defeating Altona 3-0 before taking on Neepawa.
The Kweens’ took the second game saw a shootout where they defeated Neepawa in overtime. The girls headed into the extra time tied 2-2 with the host team.
Sierra Kopachinski, Candace Whitford, Hasana Church, and Sammi Yewchuk each scored their penalty kicks, while Stephanie Novosel stopped two of five penalty kicks for the Kweens.
In the third game, the Kweens defeated Swan Valley to take home first place. Picking up markers in the final matchup were Yewchuk, Kali Lenderbeck, and Whitford.
Coach Dean Grove was pleased with the Kweens’ performance as they brought home their first road banner.
“The Kweens are a very young team again this year, with only four Grade 12 [athletes] playing on the weekend,” said Grove. “The young players coming up are doing a great job and things look bright for the future of Kweens soccer.”
