Another volleyball season is over for the Hapnot senior varsity Kings and Kweens volleyball teams.

Each team suited up one final time this year for the boys’ and girls’ provincial championships.

Both teams played their tournaments in Winnipeg, each at different high schools: the Kweens at Churchill High School located near downtown, the Kings at John Taylor Collegiate in the west end.

The Kweens went 1-3 through the round robin, defeating the host Churchill Bulldogs and narrowly losing to the Stonewall Rams. The Kweens also faced the Neelin Spartans from Brandon and the Sanford Sabres, losing both games.

Hapnot qualified for the playoff round, but dreams of a provincial title were cut short for the Kweens with a 25-10, 25-9 first-round loss to Dauphin’s DRCSS Clippers. The Clippers would go on to finish second in the tournament, losing the championship game to the College Louis-Riel Voyageurs from St. Boniface.

The Kings had a rough go in their round robin, going winless through four games. The team played better than their record may indicate, taking Altona’s WC Miller Collegiate Aces to a hard-fought third set, but did not qualify for the playoff round.

The tournament marks the end of 11 Hapnot players’ high school volleyball careers. Five Kweens players and six Kings are set to graduate this summer, including Kings Brett Davie, Ben Funk, Aaron Hilts, Branson Powell, Cole Reierson and Jordy Reykdal and Kweens Trinity Beheyt, Hasana Church, Imogen Hyndman, Kelsie Mote and Makenna Muench.

The Hapnot athletic calendar shifts now to basketball, with the season’s first tournament, the Bill McDonald Memorial Basketball Tournament, to be held in The Pas on Dec. 9-10. The senior varsity Kings and Kweens squads will be taking part.

The Reminder will wrap up the varsity volleyball season with a special feature in Friday’s edition.
