The JV Girls Basketball Season The JV Girls basketball team had a great year. With only four girls returning from last year's Zone-winning team, it was a largely new roster. Experienced players Christina McKay, Jayde Clendenning, Nicole Diakow and Esa Fernandes helped the new players get a handle on high school basketball. The girls practiced hard and enjoyed some success at tournaments in Snow River and Thompson. One of the biggest challenges the team had to deal with throughout the year was scheduling conflicts. With so many of the girls involved in dinner theatre, curling and wrestling, we ended up having to cancel our tournament in the Pas. We were also forced to play without some of our players at Zones. At Zones, the JV Girls were able to show what all of their hard work and long practices had accomplished. While we didn't win, the girls impressed the other teams with how much they had improved over the course of the season. The members of the JV Girls 2012/2013 basketball team were: McKay, Clendenning, Diakow, Fernandes, Ariel Henderson, Taylor Oliynyk, Myla Bridgeman-Forbes, Abby Wiens, Heaven Graham, Haylee Werbicki, and Madison Mihalicz Sr Boys Compete in Provincials The team went into the provincials with the fifth seed this year out of eight teams in total. Our first round match-up was with the number four seed, Windsor Park out of Winnipeg. They had been ranked as high as third in the provincial rankings leading up to the provs. The most amazing thing about this game happened before the game even started. We noticed in the stands a lot of the parents, who had actually driven the whole night in order to make the 9 a.m. start time. It's this kind of support from the parents that made this year so enjoyable. We were tied with Windsor Park at the half but came out in the third with a huge run which led to an eight point win. Next was a semi-final match up with the number one ranked team in the province _ Westgate. These guys had been number one from start to finish over the regular season and to the best of our knowledge, went undefeated against all AAA teams this year. The boys gave it everything they had but came up 16 points short. It was quite an emotional game and a very well coached opponent. Next was the bronze medal game on Saturday against Neelin out of Brandon, who were ranked number two in the province again from start to finish this year. We gave what we had but most of our game had been left on the court against Westgate and we lost by 27. Sam Kinsley was named 'Player's Choice' award recipient, voted on by all participating players in the tournament. He was absolutely amazing and deserves every accolade he is getting from the season. As a coaching staff we were and are so proud of the boys. They did both the school and the north in general proud and most definitely turned some heads this year. Wrestling Provincials 'We had a super successful weekend, first time ever having Provincials in Flin Flon, and we had such a great group of volunteers and help from individuals and businesses,' said wrestling coach Jo Skeavington. Results are as follows: Because of injuries, we were down to eight wrestlers; four male and four female. Bronze - Brandon Lam, Ryan Brooks Gold - Trevor Buick, Kara Diakow, Cody Quinn, Christina McKay, Kari Rutherford, Jayde Clendenning. The West Kildonen Team from WInnipeg, who brought up 28 wrestlers, just beat us out for the Provincial Banner. Congratulations to all for a great year!
