For everyone who made a New Year's resolution to get in shape this year, it's time to get off the couch and take action. Now that the snow has started to melt, weather is no longer an acceptable excuse for putting off the promise you made to yourself four months ago to get active and shed those pounds. If you are looking for an avenue to start on your road to wellness, the City of Flin Flon's recreation department invites you to take part in the Kids of Steel/Try a Tri Triathlon. You have until June 27 to train and condition, before the real test takes place at the Flin Flon Aqua Centre. The Kids of Steel event is for kids ages 8-18, while adults can test themselves in the Try a Tri. Kids age 8 and 9 will have a 100 metre swim, 5 km cycle and 1 km run, with the same distances for the 10 and 11 age category. In the 12 and 13 year-old category, as well as the 14-16 category, athletes will have a 200 metre swim with a 10 km cycle and a 2 km run. The 17 and 18 year-olds, as well as the adults will have a 400 metre swim, a 15 km cycle and a 3 km run. "Active living is a huge part of the triathlon," said Heather Todoschuk, Aqua Centre Supervisor. "It's always nice to have a goal to work towards. The Kids of Steel or Try a Tri is a nice way to work up to that. It is inclusive for all age groups and all ability levels." All legs of the triathlon start and finish at the Aqua Centre. Helmets must be worn during the cycle. Volunteers are always needed for this event. To volunteer or to register, contact the Aqua Centre at 681-7540. Once you have proven to yourself that you can handle a triathlon, why not enter the annual Flin Flon Triathlon, held the last Sunday in July, which happens to fall on July 25 this year. The Flin Flon Triathlon is open to anyone ages 13 and up, and you can enter as a team or individual. You can participate in the full distance of a 1,500 metre swim, 40 km cycle and 10 km run, or the sprint event, which is a half distance. Athletes from across the region will participate in the event made unique by the Flin Flon terrain. The 40 km cycle will take athletes to Sally's Beach and back, while the turn around point in the half distance is Little Hook Lake. The road route for the run will take participants down the Channing road as far as the Town garage, and back, with athletes in the full triathlon doing it twice. Challenge a friend or challenge yourself. For more information, contact the Aqua Centre at 681-7540. Another ongoing program at the Aqua Centre is Kayak Lessons for adults and youth, with certified instructor JJ Bujold. Participants learn the basics of kayaking, and also have the opportunity to participate in a little Kayak polo at the end of the class, as time permits. Also available is the boating safety course, which takes place on April 22 and May 3 from 7-10 p.m. The April 22 class will be held at the Green Room in the Flin Flon Community Hall. The May 3 class will take place at McIsaac School. The course will give an overview of the content required for the exam, the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron Boating Safety Manual and certification upon passing the exam. Chuck Gareau is the instructor. Those 14 or younger must attend both classes. Anyone born after April 1, 1983 must possess a certification card to operate a power boat. For information on any of these programs, contact the Aqua Centre at 681-7540.
