Kick it with Kirkham returns for another season Soccer season is upon us and Phantom Lake Soccer Club is gearing up for another season of youth soccer. This season is set to kick off on May 12th, with the final games being played the last weekend of June. This is a very short season for regular soccer, but together with high school soccer, menÕs soccer and teams that train and travel to tournaments, the season actually stretches into October. This year I am organizing a womenÕs soccer team, this will be a fun team that will train to get and stay fit, and probably play in a couple of tournaments. There has been a lot of interest so far and we already have enough names to make one team. We will start training at the same time the season starts. The training will be as hard as you want it to be with no pressure to be super fit. A quick drive around town and you will see that the new soccer field at Foster Park is ready for final leveling and sod. This will be ready for the high school season and hopefully, if we host the soccer zones, it will be the best field that our opponents have seen for a long time. Phantom Lake field is looking dark. This is because the top dressing needs rain to wash it into the surface, but once again it will look superb. Of course the new field at Creighton looks perfect, certainly for quality of playing surface, this is the best field so far. This year, the squirts will be moving from Centoba so that we do not conflict with baseball. The thought of a baseball flying over six year olds is a little frightening, so we will play the squirts at Phantom Lake on Friday nights. DonÕt worry, they are not expected to run the length of the field, we will be splitting the field into smaller fields for their little legs. We have over 400 kids registered again this year. The popularity of soccer in our community is growing yearly. More importantly, the standard of soccer played in our area is improving. This is evident by the fact that both Hapnot soccer teams reached the Provincial finals last year. We no longer enter tournaments out of town just to play somewhere else, but we enter them with the realization that we can win. Coaches from other communities respect us and no longer take us for granted. Training for the womenÕs U18 teams, and womenÕs senior teams (over 18) will be starting soon.
