Wow - what a weekend? Of course I am referring to the opening of the new creighton community soccer field. Sunday afternoon started with the official ribbon cutting and speeches followed by a game between my very own Flin Flon Fury girlÕs team and a celebrity team made up of prominent guests and media personnel. The star of the game had to be Rob Ôhit manÕ Hart in goal for the Media, Rob made several good saves and with the right training, and a lot of hard work, could perform well in local soccer. Rob was backed up by several personalities, among them. Laverne ÔlegsÕ Hinzman, Kelly ÔkillerÕ Carrington and Jason Ôpink shirtÕ Mandes. This game was followed by a father versus sonÕs game, most of the sons were under 12, and the dadÕs were, well Ð older. I was asked to play for the fathers and we soon found ourselves down by four goals, not that I am competitive, but that hurt. But with great skill shown by all the dads, the final score was five all, followed by the dreaded penalty shoot out, which we lost! Even though the games were a great success, they were not the issues. What the issue was, was that our area has yet another first class facility for kids to play on. With Foster Park being sodded this week, that will make two first class fields in one year, kudos to both councils and the countless volunteers for their obvious commitment to youth sports. Locally, the Phantom Lake youth soccer season has wound down, and the ladies adult soccer league is taking registrations. This should be a very good league with each team expected to have a mix of older and younger players. It is a rec league with a planned six team roster, though more would be better. You can enter as a full team, or as a group of women if you want to play together, or as an individual. More details can be obtained by phoning 687-8577. It is planned to have no upper age limit, though adult league means that you should be a minimum age of 16. Play is scheduled to start the week of July 28 and run for eight or nine weeks with a mid season tournament. The Euro championship is entering the knock out stages with my pick Spain playing well. Portugal are also favorites of the pundits, but for me, Spain have it all, skill, speed, great coaching and that certain X factor that winners have. Portugal are very very good, but for me, they rely too much on Ronaldo. One man should never make a team, unfortunately, for me, Portugal donÕt seem to realize this, and if he is injured, the streets of Lisbon will be flooded with tears shed by the Portuguese as they lose yet another final. Talking of Ronaldo, will he go to Real Madrid? My good friend Fergie ( Sir Alex Ferguson), manager of Man United says no. But Man United are now owned by the Glazier family, who are in the sports business, and for them money talks and the star walks, watch this space. Toronto FC, the only Canadian team in the MLS won again this weekend, 3-1 against the Colorado Rapids, they have not lost at home this season. If they can improve their away record might just be in the MLS finals this year. Good luck to all our players who are travelling to Saskatoon this weekend for the annual Grevers tournament, play well and have fun winning!
