OK so the local youth soccer season is over, and what a success. One rain out day, all divisions finished on schedule, and a lot of fun for everyone involved. Now the womenÕs season is getting ready to start. The last week of July sees the inaugural season of the Phantom lake ladies soccer club. We intend to have six teams, made up of 14 players, to allow for holidays, working etc., but to be honest, six teams made up of any number over seven players will work just fine. We already have almost 30 players so I do believe that we will reach our goal of six full teams. Check out the new website www.flinflonladiessoccer.net for information on the new league. Do not worry if you canÕt play soccer, this is fun, most of our players have never played before, so just come out on a Tuesday or Thursday at 6.30 p.m. at the Creighton Community Soccer Field for your introduction to soccer. Of course you can pick up your PLLSC registration form at the same time. The opening of the new soccer field in Flin Flon is fast approaching. The fence will go up on July 14, the new goalposts will be delivered, and of course we have to have something special to open it. I am hoping that we can all get together, the Phantom Lake Soccer Club and the City of Flin Flon, for ÔSoccer day in Flin FlonÕ. Of course you all know by now that Rob (Mr soccer) Hart has challenged me to bring a celebrity team to play his celebrity team, not one to back down from a challenge, of course I accepted. So far I have two teams willing to play for me, and I still havenÕt heard from Rob? Now for a success story. About six weeks ago I started a womenÕs introduction to soccer night at Creighton. Most of the women who turned up had never played before, but had sons or daughters, or friends who play, and wanted to try it. This last Tuesday, July 1, we were scheduled to play at 6.30 p.m., of course it was raining, windy, and not very nice weather wise. I turned up not really expecting anyone else to show up, but we had 14 women show up to play soccer in the rain. These women not only played, but showed such an improvement from when they first started just six weeks ago, they looked like soccer players, and yeah, I was proud of them. I have a phrase that has carried me to where I am today, ÔYou are who you think you are,Õ and believe me, these women are now soccer players. Some great news, I heard this week from the Physical Education department at Hapnot Collegiate, is that we will be starting a JV soccer program. This is great news, when we are trying to win a provincial championship, it is not always possible for a coach to play everyone, naturally you go with your better, stronger players to win. This makes it hard for the younger players who have to wait to get their chance, plus they donÕt get any competitive experience. Now they will have a team to play regular soccer on, improve their skills in a competitive format, and of course win more banners for Hapnot. This is a great step forward for Hapnot, and of course for our soccer stars of the future.
